A torsion spring letting go is a single sharp report from inside the garage, loud enough that people come out into the street to see what happened. Afterwards the door is either immovable or alarmingly heavy, and the opener will pull, labour and give up, because it was built to guide a counterbalanced door rather than to hoist a dead weight.
In El Monte there is a version of this job that we see more than anywhere else in the service area, and it is worth understanding because it changes the repair. The spring was correct. It was the right wire, the right length, the right number of turns for the door hanging there. What was wrong was what the spring was anchored to.
The spring is right and the anchor moves
A wound torsion spring is not a passive object. It is holding a large amount of stored torque, and every bit of that torque has to be reacted somewhere. It goes into the centre bearing plate, and from the plate straight into whatever the plate is bolted to — normally the header timber above the opening. That reaction load is not a brief event during operation. It is there constantly, day and night, for as long as the spring is wound, and it is trying to rotate the plate against the wood the whole time.
In a garage that was framed as part of the house, the header is a sized member inside a structural system and it takes that steadily without complaint. In a garage that was added later, the header over the opening was frequently made up from what was appropriate to hold a roof rather than to receive a concentrated, permanently applied torque. It carries the roof perfectly well. What it does under years of constant rotational load from a spring anchor is different: the timber under the plate compresses, the fixings begin to work in their holes, and the plate slowly changes its position by a small amount.
That small amount is the whole problem, because a torsion system is set by turns and the turns are measured against a fixed anchor. When the anchor moves, the effective wind changes without anybody touching anything. The door that was in balance last year is now slightly heavy or slightly light, and it gets a little more so each season. Owners describe it as the door gradually going off, or as the opener starting to strain, and they usually assume the spring is tired. Frequently the spring is fine. It is doing exactly what it was set to do, against a reference point that will not stay still.
What a moving anchor does to everything downstream
A door out of balance does not stay a balance problem for long. If the counterbalance is now slightly under what the door weighs, the cables carry the difference every cycle and the drums take a harder wrap; the bottom fixtures see more load; the opener makes up the shortfall and pays for it in its drive gear. If the counterbalance has effectively gone the other way, the door wants to lift, the cables can go slack at the bottom of travel and jump their grooves, and you get the classic cable-off-the-drum call. Either direction produces a cascade, and every part of the cascade looks like its own separate fault to whoever replaces it in isolation.
There is a further effect that is specific to an anchor working loose rather than a spring wearing out, and it is worth knowing because it is a useful warning sign. A plate that has begun to creep will usually leave evidence you can see: a witness mark or a shadow around the fixings where the plate has shifted on the surface, a hairline gap opening along one edge of the plate, rust staining bleeding out of a fixing hole, or a bearing that has stopped running true because the plate is no longer square to the shaft. If you can see any of that above your opening, the door is telling you something before it tells you loudly.
This is also why we will not simply wind a new spring onto an existing anchor here without looking behind it. Replacing the spring and re-using a mounting that has already demonstrated it will move gives you a correctly specified system that will drift out of balance again on the same schedule as the last one. Where the plate has moved, the honest repair is to make the anchorage good — backing plate onto sound framing, load spread across more than one member, fixings into something that was actually built to hold — and then wind the spring against something that will stay put.
Do not run the opener, and please do not attempt this one
The single instruction that saves people the most money is the simplest one: stop pressing the button. The motor exists to guide a door that its springs are already holding. Driving it against a door with a failed spring strips the nylon drive gear, can crack the logic board, and turns a spring job into a spring-and-opener job for no benefit at all. If the door is shut, leave it shut, park on the drive and call. If it stopped part way, keep everybody and every vehicle out from underneath it, because whatever is still holding it up is holding it unevenly.
We say this about very few tasks, but do not attempt the replacement yourself. A wound torsion spring stores a serious quantity of energy and it is released through correctly sized winding bars in a specific order. Almost all the injuries in this trade come from improvised tools in the winding cone — a screwdriver, a length of rebar, a bar that is the wrong diameter — and they are severe and permanent. It is not a question of being careful or being handy. It is a question of having the right bars, and of knowing what the anchor behind the plate is before you put several hundred pounds of torque into it, which on an added garage is genuinely not something you can tell by looking.
One more thing, and it applies here as it does everywhere. Where a door runs two springs and one has failed, we will recommend replacing the pair every time.
