How a track assembly is put together
Track is not one piece. Each side of the door has a vertical section fixed to the jamb, a curved radius section, and a horizontal section hung from the ceiling on angle iron. The verticals are held by jamb brackets bolted to the wood or masonry of the opening; the horizontals are supported by hanging angle lagged into the ceiling structure and joined to the radius at a flange. Every one of those junctions is an adjustment point and a potential place for movement.
Profile size matters. Most residential doors run on two-inch track, meaning the channel accepts a two-inch roller. Heavier residential and light commercial doors use three-inch track with correspondingly larger rollers. The two are not interchangeable, and a mismatch between roller diameter and channel width is a guaranteed source of side play and eventual derailment.
Radius is the other defining specification. A twelve-inch radius turns the door from vertical to horizontal over a short distance and is used where headroom is limited; a fifteen-inch radius makes the same turn more gradually, which runs quieter and is gentler on rollers and hinges where there is ceiling space for it. The radius chosen at installation is fixed by the geometry above the opening, which is why replacing a section means matching profile and radius rather than fitting whatever is available.
Two dimensions govern whether the door runs correctly. The first is plumb: the vertical track must be truly vertical relative to the door face. The second is spacing: the gap between the track and the door must be consistent from top to bottom, so the roller sits at the same depth in the channel throughout. Both are set at installation and both can drift.
Common causes of track problems

- Hanging angle lag screws pulling out of the ceiling structure
- Spacing drifting so the roller sits too shallow or too deep in the channel

- A misaligned joint at the radius, leaving a lip that the roller strikes
- Damage inflicted by a seized roller that has been sliding rather than rolling
- Track pulled out of alignment by a cable or spring failure elsewhere on the door
How a track fault presents, and how it is diagnosed
Track problems have a signature that separates them from most other faults: they are position-specific. A door that catches, bangs or slows at the same height every single cycle is telling you that something at that point in the run is wrong. A fault that appears at random points in travel is more likely to be electronic, and a fault that affects the whole travel is more likely to be balance.
Diagnosis starts with the door disconnected from the opener and moved slowly by hand, which is the only way to feel where resistance begins rather than watching the opener push through it. The technician then checks the verticals for plumb with a level, measures the spacing to the door face at several heights, and sights along the channel to find deformation that is not obvious from directly in front.
The joints get particular attention. The junction between vertical and radius, and between radius and horizontal, are where a small misalignment produces a large impact, because the roller is changing direction there under load. A lip of a sixteenth of an inch at that joint is enough to produce the bang people report as a bad roller.
Finally, the mounting is checked rather than assumed. A jamb bracket whose lag has lost its grip in the wood will look correct while the door is closed and move under load, which is exactly the fault that is hardest to find and easiest to correct once found.
Safety warning
Bent or damaged track can release a roller without warning, and a door that derails mid-travel drops on the affected side. Keep people and vehicles clear of the opening until it has been inspected, and do not attempt to hammer a deformed section back into shape — beating the channel changes its internal width unevenly, so the roller runs tight in one place and loose in another, which makes a derailment more likely rather than less.
Realignment versus replacement
- Realign when the channel itself is undamaged and the problem is position: verticals out of plumb, spacing drifted, or a joint that has stepped at the radius.
- Realign when fasteners have worked loose — jamb brackets and hanging angle can be re-secured, and where the wood has become soft, moved to sound material.
- Realign when the track was pulled out of position by a cable or spring failure, once the underlying counterbalance fault has been corrected.
- Replace the section when the channel has been kinked, crushed or twisted, because the internal width can no longer be made consistent by hand.
- Replace when rust has perforated or thinned the channel, typically at the base of the vertical where water has stood.
- Replace when a joint flange is deformed or elongated at its bolt holes, since the joint can no longer be held in alignment however carefully it is set.

Secure the door before adjusting anything
The door is clamped in position and the counterbalance state established. Loosening track fasteners on a door that is free to move is how a straightforward alignment job turns into a derailment, so nothing is backed off until the door is held.

Correct the underlying fault first
Where the track was moved by something else — a snapped cable, a failed spring, a seized roller — that fault is fixed first. Aligning track under a door whose counterbalance is still wrong simply means re-aligning it again after the next cycle pulls it back out.

Replace damaged sections rather than straighten them
Kinked or crushed sections are replaced with matching profile and radius. Where an exact original section is unavailable, a compatible full vertical or a matched radius set is fitted rather than mixing profiles, because a step in channel width at a joint is worse than the original damage.

Set plumb and spacing
Verticals are set truly plumb relative to the door face and the spacing is set consistently from top to bottom so the roller sits at a uniform depth. This is measured at several heights rather than eyeballed, because a taper of an eighth of an inch over seven feet is enough to bind a door.

Align the radius and hang the horizontals
The radius sections are joined so the roller crosses each junction without a step, and the horizontals are levelled and hung on angle fixed into sound structure. Sagging horizontals cause the door to rub the header at the top of travel, which is often mistaken for a seal problem.

Cycle, balance and re-verify
The door is cycled by hand and felt for resistance at every point in the run before the opener is reconnected. Force settings are then reset to the minimum that works, since correcting a binding track usually means the opener needs considerably less force than it has been using.

It can also be a single flat-spotted roller, which is why the door is moved slowly by hand as part of the diagnosis rather than judged from the noise alone.
- Consistency matters more than any single figure, because the correct spacing depends on the door and hardware. What we set is a uniform gap from top to bottom so the roller sits at the same depth throughout its run. Track that is closer at the bottom than the top will bind, and the reverse lets rollers wander.
- Usually only the damaged section, plus whatever else the impact moved. We also check the jamb and header behind it, because an impact hard enough to deform steel track has often loosened its mounting, and re-fixing to damaged wood is not a lasting repair.
