What holds a door in its track, and what lets it out
A sectional door is not fastened to its track. It is held there by geometry and by tension. Each panel carries rollers whose stems sit in hinges, and those rollers ride inside a channel of steel. What keeps them in the channel is the cable tension pulling the door toward the opening and the fact that the track spacing is set slightly closer than the roller's travel. Remove either condition and the roller can simply come out.
That is why the great majority of off-track doors are not really track failures at all. They are cable, roller or hinge failures that ended with a roller leaving the channel. A cable that snaps or jumps its drum groove removes the tension on one side; the door hangs at an angle; the rollers on the loose side are no longer pulled into the track and they come free. Diagnosed as a track problem, this gets fixed by pushing the rollers back in — and then it happens again within weeks.
The second family of causes is loss of alignment. Track is mounted to the jamb with brackets and to the ceiling with hanging angle, and every one of those fasteners is in wood or masonry that moves. Over years the verticals drift out of plumb or the spacing to the door face opens up, and the door starts binding at a specific point. Binding puts side load on the rollers, and side load is exactly what levers a roller out of the channel.
The third is impact, which is usually a vehicle. A knock to a vertical track section deforms the channel, and a door that has run smoothly for a decade suddenly catches at that point. Impact damage is the one case where the track really is the primary problem, and it is also the case where partial repair is least likely to succeed — a kinked channel cannot be straightened back to a consistent internal width by hand.
Why doors come off the track
- A snapped or slipped lift cable, removing tension on one side of the door
- A seized or flat-spotted roller that binds and then levers itself out
- Roller stems worn thin, allowing excessive side play in the channel
- Hinge fasteners torn out of an end stile, letting a roller wander
- Vertical track drifted out of plumb or out of spacing from the door face
- Loose jamb brackets or hanging angle that has worked its fasteners free
- Vehicle impact deforming a vertical section or the radius transition
- Obstruction on the floor under one side, twisting the door on closing
What to do right now
Stop using the opener immediately — every further attempt drags the door further out and turns a roller and cable job into a track and panel job. Move vehicles out from under the door if you safely can, and keep everybody out of the garage. Do not try to lever the door back into the track with a bar or your hands: a door that is off on one side is being held by an unbalanced system and can drop or twist without warning.
How the door is put back safely

Support the door before anything is moved
The door is clamped or blocked so it cannot travel, and locking pliers are set on the track below the bottom roller. Nothing else happens until the door's weight is under control, because the load path in an off-track door is unpredictable by definition.

Release or verify the counterbalance
Spring tension is assessed and, where the springs are intact and holding, they are left loaded and the door supported. If a spring has failed or a cable has parted, whatever tension survives is wound out in controlled quarter turns before a roller is touched.

Find the initiating failure, not the symptom
The technician works backwards from where the door left the track: which roller came out first, whether the cable is off the drum, whether a hinge has torn, whether the track is deformed at that exact point. Putting the door back without answering this guarantees a repeat.

Replace what failed
Broken cables are replaced in pairs and re-seated in the drum grooves with equal tension. Seized rollers are replaced, torn hinges renewed, and worn stems swapped out. Deformed track sections are replaced rather than beaten back into shape, because internal channel width has to be consistent for the roller to run.

Re-seat the door and re-square it
The panels are guided back into the channel from the bottom up and the door is checked for square across the full opening. Track verticals are reset to plumb, spacing from the door face is set consistently, and the radius transition is checked for a smooth handover into the horizontals.

Rebalance and re-verify the safeties
With the opener still disconnected, the door is cycled by hand and checked for hold at waist height. Then the opener is reconnected, travel limits and force reset to the minimum that works, and both the photo-eyes and the contact reverse are tested before the technician leaves.
Why an off-track door often needs more than realignment
By the time a door has come off, several things have usually already happened. A panel has taken a twisting load it was not designed for, which shows up as tear-out around the hinge fasteners in the end stile. The roller that came out has often been dragged along the outside of the channel, damaging its bearing. The cable on the loose side has frequently jumped its drum groove and abraded itself against the flange.
None of that is visible from the driveway, and it is the reason a fifteen-minute realignment tends not to hold. A proper repair prices in the components that took the secondary damage, which is why the estimate for an off-track door often lists rollers, a hinge or two and a cable set alongside the track work itself. You will see each of those parts and be shown why it is on the list before any of it is fitted.
There is also a judgement call at the panel level. Where a section has bowed or the end stile can no longer hold a hinge securely, replacing that section is the durable answer, and where several sections are affected the arithmetic starts to favour a new door. That decision is presented as a written comparison rather than a recommendation you have to take on trust.
Preventing the next one
Off-track events are among the most preventable failures on a garage door, because the two most common initiating causes — a worn roller and a fraying cable — both announce themselves well in advance. A roller that is beginning to bind makes the door louder and slightly rougher over months. A cable that is starting to fray shows broken outer strands at the drum wrap long before it parts.
The practical prevention is a periodic look at four things: the cable where it wraps the drum, the rollers spun by hand for roughness, the hinge fasteners in the end stiles, and the track fasteners at the jamb brackets. Any of those found early is a small job. Found after the door has come down at an angle, they are all part of a much larger one.
The other prevention is not overriding symptoms. A door that catches at one point in its travel, or an opener whose force has been turned up so it will push through a rough spot, is a door being driven through a mechanical problem. Force settings exist to protect people, not to overcome binding, and turning them up is how a minor alignment issue ends with the door out of its track.

- Only if a professional has told you it is safe. A door that is off on one side has an unbalanced load path, and pushing or pulling it can twist a panel, bend track or drop the door. If the counterbalance is also broken, the answer is a straightforward no.
