When you ring us, the person taking the call does not promise you a van from a fixed address. An alley-facing door is a wall of a working corridor — the lane that carries the block's refuse collection, its deliveries and its through traffic — and everything about how it wears follows from that.

Start with how a vehicle gets in. A door on a street frontage is approached straight on, down a drive with room to line up. A door on an alley is approached along the lane and entered at ninety degrees, in a space that allows no run-up and often barely allows the turn. Every single entry is a tight manoeuvre, and the swept path of the vehicle — the arc its corners actually travel — passes close to the jamb on the inside of the turn and across the lower face of the door. The contacts this produces are individually trivial: a bumper corner brushing the bottom section, a wheel kissing the vertical track, a mirror clipping the jamb edge. None of them stops the door. All of them accumulate. Cumulative low-speed contact damage, concentrated low down and on the side of the turn, is the signature fault of this city, and a street-facing door simply never develops it.

Now consider what nobody sees. The alley elevation is the side of the house that no one looks at on the way in, on the way out, or from any window anyone spends time at. A fault on an alley door therefore matures in private. A lift cable can shed strands for months, a track can drift further out of true with every knock, a scrape can grow into a grind, and the first the household knows of any of it is the day the door stops. More seriously, a door that fails to close — because something interrupted the sensors, or the opener reversed, or someone pressed the remote without watching — can stand open onto a public lane for hours before anyone notices. On an alley door, security is not a footnote to the mechanical work. It is a large share of the reason the work matters.

Finally, the lane itself. Alley surfaces drain worse than streets — they are patched, they hold water, and passing vehicles throw that water at the nearest surface, which is the bottom of your door. The bottom seal, the lower edge of the bottom section and the hardware nearest the floor all age faster on the alley face than anything on the front of the same house. Refuse and service vehicles pass within arm's reach of the door daily, bins are wheeled along the face of it, and grit and debris collect against the lower track. And at night the lane is dark, because alleys are not lit the way streets are — which is why, when you book out-of-hours work with us, the questions we ask are about access and lighting as much as about the fault.   • Glancing impact damage low on the door and track

    The defining Bell fault. Years of right-angle entries from a narrow lane leave their record on the hardware: a rolled or dented flange low on one vertical track, a bottom section with a soft crease at one corner, scars along the jamb edge on the inside of the turn, paint transfer at bumper height. The mechanical result is a track pushed fractionally out of position, so a roller climbs a rail that is no longer quite parallel to its partner and the door binds at one height in its travel. Because each contact was too small to report, the household describes the door as simply getting old. It is not old. The slab edge under the door often spalls in the same conditions, which breaks the seal line the rubber is trying to close against. On every Bell visit we look at the bottom of the door as a matter of routine, because catching a perished seal and a surface-rusted edge early is cheap, and replacing a rotted bottom section after the water has had years to work is not.

  • Bins, service traffic and debris against the running gear

    A street-facing door might be touched by something other than its own car once a year. An alley-facing door has the block's bins wheeled along its face weekly and service vehicles manoeuvring within inches of it, and the low-mounted hardware takes the consequences: photo-eye brackets knocked out of line at exactly bin-wheel height, debris and gravel kicked against the lower track and lodged where the door lands, scuffs on the face that nobody owns up to because nobody saw them happen. None of this is exceptional here; it is the ordinary weather of the lane. So a Bell service visit includes checks that would be paranoid elsewhere — bracket alignment, the landing line of the door, the state of the lower track channel — because here they find something more often than not.
