What it leaves you with is a door that either will not move at all or has turned frighteningly heavy, and an opener that heaves at it and gives up. That last part is not the motor failing — it is a motor doing what it should. It was sized to guide a door its springs already hold, not to lift one that has lost its counterweight.

That is what makes the spring the blind spot on a well-kept door specifically. On a neglected door you might at least see surface corrosion pitting the wire, and pitting does accelerate a spring towards failure, so rust is a genuine clue where it exists. Keep the door clean and dry and painted, though, and you remove even that clue — the spring is bright, unmarked and giving nothing away right up to the point a crack runs through a coil and it drops open. The better the door has been kept, the less the spring's appearance is worth as a guide to it, which is the exact opposite of what an owner reasonably expects.

So when we tell someone in this city that their spring is near the end, it is not because it looks bad — it very likely looks perfect. It is because a spring's life is not read from its appearance at all. It is read from how the door balances, from the gap between the coils, and from an honest reckoning of how many times the door has actually been cycled. What actually can be read, and what cannot

Three things can be read on a spring, and none of them is its shine. The first is the coil gap. Short of that, the coils are inspected for any separation or distortion along the body and for corrosion or pitting that would shorten the life, because while a clean spring tells you little, a pitted one does tell you something worth acting on.

The second and most useful reading is the balance test, and it is the check almost no owner has ever had done. The opener is disconnected and the door lifted by hand to about waist height and let go. A door whose spring still has its tension will sit there, near enough weightless, held by the counterbalance. A door that sinks, or that has to be hauled up and drops the moment you release it, has a spring that has lost tension and is no longer carrying its share — the surest hands-on sign that a spring is going, well before it actually breaks. The third is cycle count, which is arithmetic rather than inspection.
