This is the page where the honest answer is often 'do not replace the door yet', and on the well-kept doors this city has so many of, that is worth saying first. A door that has been looked after is frequently a door whose panels, track and structure are perfectly sound and whose only real trouble is a wearing part that can be renewed. Replacing a door like that is spending on the one part of it that was never the problem.

Take the case for keeping the door first, since on one that has been looked after it is usually the stronger case. Provided the panels are still straight, the stiles solid, the hinge holes not yet worn oval and the opening itself square, then every last thing that has failed on the door is a wearing item, and putting fresh wearing items on gives you a door good for years more. On a door that has been kept in order, that is very often exactly the situation, and the honest recommendation is to repair it — said straight, with nothing added to the estimate to make replacing it look the better bet.
Now the case the other way, which is just as real. The panels are the one thing you cannot sensibly replace singly once the door is out of production, and they are where true end-of-life declares itself: a top section dished around the opener bracket, lower sections rusting up from the slab, hinge holes so elongated the door will no longer hold its alignment, end stiles buckling where the rollers bear on them. Put a spring that has run out its cycles alongside that, plus cables rotting at the bottom fixture, spent bearings and an opener at the end of its rail, and what you have stopped being is a door that needs parts — it has become a collection of parts in the shape of a door. A smart finish changes none of this; paint lies on top of the structure and reports nothing about it.
Which of those two pictures you are in is not a question of taste and it is not settled on the doorstep. The door goes on a scale, each panel is laid against a straight edge to find any distortion, the stiles and hinges are read for wear, the cables are followed from end to end, the track is judged on gauge and geometry, and the opener is weighed against both the door and the state of its own rail. Out of that comes a list, a condition noted against every line of it. Where most of the list still holds service — which, on a cared-for door, it frequently does — the call is to repair. Where most of it does not, the call is to replace, because renewing a single item on a door in that state only purchases the next visit. Either way you get the list in writing and the choice stays yours.
If it is a replacement, specifying it properly
Where a new door is the answer, the point is to get the specification right rather than to repeat whatever was there. The spring is the clearest case, and it ties straight back to the invisible wear that runs through this whole site: it gets calculated from the finished door, weighed on the day, and specified inside its rated band rather than at the bottom of it — because a spring worked closer to its limit fails sooner, and a spring gives you no warning when it does. Where the household uses the garage as its everyday way in and out, a higher-cycle spring makes sense as the default choice rather than an add-on, because fitting it takes no more labour and the gain in rated life is far from trivial.
The rest of the specification runs on the same principle of building for the wear that stays hidden. Rollers on sealed bearings instead of bare steel, since over ten years the gap in noise and wear between the two dwarfs the gap in what they take to fit. A reinforcing strut run across the top section at the point the opener arm attaches, on any door broad enough to warrant it, so the motor's pull is shared out rather than piled onto one bracket. None of it is unusual; it is only the difference between a door specified for the job it will do and one specified to look right the day it is hung.
The door itself deserves to be chosen rather than defaulted into. Where the garage doubles as a workshop or as the family's way indoors, the insulation is a genuine bonus on top. As for looks, the advice worth heeding is to go and stand at the kerb before you open a single brochure, take in what the roof, the windows and the front door are already saying, and pick a door that sits well with them — but appearance belongs at the bottom of the list rather than the top, because it is the one aspect of a new door that needs no looking after.
