Very few people call able to name the part that has failed, and there is no reason they should. The door sticks at one height, or shuts with light showing at a corner, or goes up with one side leading. Somewhere behind that description is a component, and on this ground a good proportion of the time the component is innocent — it is being destroyed by a geometry problem that nobody has measured.

The same symptom with tracks that converge by an eighth of an inch over their length is not a hardware problem at all, and replacing hardware will buy you a few quiet weeks and no more. Two doors, one symptom, two entirely different jobs, and the only thing separating them is a measurement.
It also gives you something you can hold us to. When we hand over the written estimate, the numbers are on it, so you can see what was found rather than take a verdict on trust. If we say the tracks need resetting, you will have seen the spacing at the top and the spacing at the bottom. Reading wear as a map of the geometry
Before anything comes off the door, the wear pattern is worth reading, because on a door running in a moved opening the wear is never symmetrical and the asymmetry points straight at the cause. Hinges elongating at the pin on one end stile only. A cable showing wear on one drum and not on its pair. The opener leaves its own evidence. We pull the manual release and take the door through its full travel by hand, because a motor coupled to a door hides everything. A properly balanced door moves under light hand pressure and stays where you leave it at any height. A door that is fighting a geometry problem is not uniformly heavy — it is heavy in one part of its travel and normal elsewhere, and it will often try to twist under your hands as it passes the tight point. That is a completely different feel from a door whose springs are simply tired, and the difference is worth more than any amount of guesswork over the phone.
Then we work down the load path in order. Spring condition and specification; the centre bearing plate and the timber behind it; the shaft for runout; both drums for seating, wear and equal cable wrap; both lift cables end to end for broken strands and distortion at the terminations; then the running gear, hinges, end stiles, track plumb and spacing, and the state of the anchors into jambs that have been worked by decades of slow movement. Electronics come last, on purpose, because testing a control board before establishing that the door is balanced is the most efficient way in this trade to sell somebody an opener they never needed.
What gets corrected, and what you are given first
The correction on a moved opening is not glamorous and it is mostly about reference points. Vertical tracks get set true and parallel to the path the door actually needs to travel, packed out from the jamb wherever the jamb is no longer straight, rather than screwed flat to a jamb that has stopped being a reliable reference. Drums get reseated so both cables take up at the same rate, and the cables get equalised so the door arrives level at the top. Fixings that have worked loose get relocated into sound material, or spread onto a backing plate spanning sound framing where the original timber will no longer hold. The bottom line of the door gets brought to meet the slab it actually has. Done in that order, the parts you then fit last for the life they were rated for.
Springs, cables, drums, bearings, rollers, hinges, top and bottom fixtures, track resetting, seals, sensor faults, drive gears and travel-and-force settings are first-visit work in the large majority of cases, because those parts are on the van before it reaches you.
