A failed spring announces itself with a single sharp bang from the garage — people often assume a shelf has come down — and after it the door is either immovable or alarmingly heavy. The opener will pull, strain and stop, because it was built to guide a balanced door, not to hoist an unbalanced one.
Spring work in Whittier has a particular complication that newer parts of the county do not share, and it is worth knowing about before you book anybody: on a good number of the city's older garages, the question is not only which spring, but what the spring is anchored to.
Extension springs, and why so many are still here
Older detached garages in Whittier frequently have too little clearance above the opening for a torsion tube, and open rafters rather than a finished ceiling. The result is that a great many of these doors were fitted with extension springs instead — the long springs that run parallel to the horizontal tracks along each side, stretching as the door comes down. They work, and where they are correctly sized and properly restrained they are a legitimate system.
The problem is restraint. An extension spring under load stores energy along its whole length, and when it fails it does not simply go slack — it can whip. That is exactly why the safety containment cable exists: a steel cable threaded through the centre of the spring and anchored at both ends, so a failure is contained rather than launched across the garage. On older installations here we regularly find that cable missing entirely, or present on one side only, or terminated into a fixing that will not hold.
Our position on this is not negotiable. If we work on an extension spring system that has no containment cables, we fit them. It is a small part and a few minutes of labour, and it is the difference between a spring failure being an inconvenience and being an injury. Torsion conversions and the substrate problem
Where there is headroom for it, torsion is the better system: the spring sits on a shaft above the opening, the load is shared through drums and cables, and the failure mode is contained by the shaft itself. On a low-headroom opening a front-mount or rear-mount conversion with low-headroom track can often achieve it where a standard kit cannot. We survey for this rather than assume it either way.
But a torsion spring pushes its entire reaction load into the centre bearing plate, and the bearing plate is only as good as what it is bolted to. In an older Whittier garage that is very often original dimensional timber, sometimes dry, sometimes already carrying old lag holes from a previous installation, occasionally with a split running from one of them. Driving a fresh lag into that and winding a spring against it is how an anchor pulls out of a header — and when it does, the door comes down with nothing holding it.
So before we wind anything we inspect the header, the framing behind it and the existing fixings. Where the substrate is sound we fix into it properly. Where it is not, we fit a backing plate that spans to sound framing and distributes the load, or we address the timber first. It adds a little time to the job. It is not optional.
Specifying the spring to the door you actually have
We weigh the door. A scale under the bottom section with the springs disconnected takes a few minutes and tells us exactly what the system has to carry, which is the only defensible basis for choosing wire size, inside diameter and length. Reading the numbers off the broken spring and ordering the same again simply reinstalls whatever decision somebody made years ago — and in a city where doors have been swapped into old openings repeatedly, that decision is often wrong.
The weight change matters here more than most places. An original single-layer timber door being replaced with an insulated steel one changes the load significantly, and on a two-car opening it changes it a great deal. Where a door has two springs we replace them as a pair; they have completed identical cycles under identical load, and fitting one new spring beside a fatigued one buys you a second callout and an unbalanced door in the meantime.
We replace lift cables alongside the springs unless the cables are genuinely recent, because they age together and the corroded end at the bottom fixture is a known weak point in damp rear-lot and hillside garages. Once everything is wound we test the balance by hand with the opener disconnected, and only then reconnect and reset the travel and force.
