Opener complaints sort into three piles. Nothing happens at all; the motor runs but the door does not move; or the door starts to close and then reverses back up. The third pile is the largest, it is almost always the safety sensors, and it is almost always far cheaper to put right than people fear.

In a detached garage that wire has usually been run along the wall by hand, stapled to a sill plate or clipped to old timber, sometimes with a joint made mid-run and taped rather than terminated. Damp gets into that joint. Corrosion at a staple that has pierced the insulation produces an intermittent fault that comes and goes with the weather, which is precisely why homeowners describe it as the opener having a mind of its own. We test continuity along the run rather than swapping the eyes and hoping.
The other regular culprit is physical. Rear-lot garages accumulate things at floor level, and an eye that has been knocked out of alignment by a bicycle wheel or is looking through a lens filmed with dust will fail intermittently before it fails outright. Realignment, a clean lens, proper terminations and clipping the run away from moisture resolves the large majority of reversing-door calls, and none of that requires a new opener.
When the motor runs and the door does not move
A chain or screw drive that whirs without moving the door has usually stripped its main drive gear, a nylon gear running against a steel worm shaft. On the major brands that is a gear-and-sprocket kit and a bench-level job, not a reason to replace the unit. What we will not do is fit the gear and leave.
A stripped gear is very often the symptom rather than the disease. An opener that has spent years dragging a door which binds slightly in an out-of-square opening, or hauling a door that is under-sprung, will consume gears on a schedule. If the force setting has been wound up over the years to make the door close reliably, that is the tell. We check the balance and the track geometry before fitting the gear, because otherwise we are simply booking your next repair.
Power is the other thing worth checking in a detached garage. Openers fed through a long undersized run, or worse through an extension lead, can brown out under starting load — the motor labours, the light dips, and the unit behaves erratically.
