Very few people ring up already knowing which part let go, and there is no reason they should. What they have is a symptom: a bang, a door that climbs a foot and quits, a door sitting noticeably out of true, a remote that no longer gets a response. The single biggest error we get called in to correct is the one that follows from that: an opener replaced because the door would not move, when the reason the door would not move was that the door itself had failed structurally where the opener attaches to it. Then the tension side, in load order. Spring condition and specification first, then the centre bearing plate and the timber it is anchored into, then the shaft along its full length for bow and runout, then both drums for seating, set-screw grip and groove wear, then the lift cables end to end. On a wide door the cables get a particularly close look at two places: at the drum, where broken strands and evidence of a wrap climbing over itself show up first, and at the bottom fixture, where corrosion, distortion of the clevis and elongation of the pin hole tell you the bracket has been taking load at an angle rather than straight.

After that the door as a structure — the top section and its operator bracket, whether a strut is present and whether it genuinely reaches the end stiles, hinge condition through the middle of each section where a wide door racks hardest, end stile fixings, roller stems, track plumb and spacing measured across the full width, and how well the jamb fixings are still holding. Electronics are deliberately kept until last. Put a meter on a logic board before you have established that the door is balanced and structurally intact and you will eventually sell somebody a motor that was never the problem. Working in the sequence that reaches the cheapest correct answer is a discipline, not a courtesy.

What finishes on the first visit, and what you hear first
