A spring failure is a single flat bang from the garage, loud enough that people usually go and look for something that has fallen over. Afterwards the door will not lift, or lifts with alarming effort, and the opener strains against it and gives up. That is a counterbalance system that has just lost most of its capacity in one instant.

Why springs here often fail before their rated life

There are trade-offs to discuss, including how coated wire behaves in service, and we will lay those out rather than simply fitting whatever came off.

The rest of the tension system gets renewed alongside it. Lift cables age in the same environment as the spring and their weak point — the swaged loop at the bottom fixture — is lower down and wetter, so we replace them with the springs unless they are genuinely recent. We check the drums for grooving, the end bearings and centre bearing for play, and the bottom fixtures at their fastener holes. Winding a new, correctly specified spring onto a corroded cable is not a repair; it is a deferral.

Pairs, and the reason we do not leave a single spring on a wide door

A two-spring door gets two new springs. Both have breathed the same air, turned the same number of times and shouldered the same share of the load, so the one still intact is not in good condition — it is simply the one that has not fractured yet. On a corrosion-driven failure the argument is stronger still, because whatever attacked the wire on one spring has been attacking the other for exactly as long.

There is also a safety argument that has nothing to do with cost. A pair of springs shares the load, which means each one works less and lasts longer, and it means the system fails gracefully: when one goes, the other still supports much of the door while you park outside and pick up the phone. A single spring on a wide door transfers the entire mass to the cables, the drums and the opener in the instant it lets go, and everything downstream takes that shock at once.

Please do not attempt this repair yourself. We say that about very few jobs and we mean it about this one. A wound torsion spring holds a substantial amount of stored energy which is released through correctly sized winding bars in a specific sequence; the injuries that follow from using a screwdriver or a length of bar stock in the winding cone are severe and permanent. If your door is currently shut with a broken spring, leave it shut, park on the driveway, and do not run the opener against it.
