A torsion spring letting go announces itself as one flat crack from inside the garage, loud enough that neighbours come out to check whether something has hit a car. What is left is a door that either will not shift at all or is frighteningly heavy to lift, and an opener that strains, slows and gives up, because it was built to guide a counterbalanced door rather than hoist a dead one.

There is a second half to a spring job in this city that most people never hear about, and it is the part we would most like you to know before you book anyone. Correcting the springs changes how the door behaves. The opener has been quietly compensating for the old behaviour, sometimes for years, and unless it is reset to the corrected balance the job is not actually finished.

The spring that was fine, and the opener that hid its drift

How we specify the replacement, and why we weigh rather than copy

We do not read the wire size and length off the broken spring and order the same again. It is how a good deal of this work gets done and it is not defensible, because a failed spring has stretched — its coils have shifted and its overall length is no longer the length it left the factory at, so the figure taken off the wreckage was never the right figure to begin with. We gauge the wire across a counted run of coils on the undamaged portion, establish inside diameter and wound length from there, and then check the whole specification back against the door's weighed mass, the height it travels through and the diameter of the drums fitted to the shaft.

The weighing is not a formality in this city. Because doors here have been replaced independently of everything around them, the door currently hanging is very often not the door the system was originally designed around. We put a scale under the bottom section with the tension off and read the actual figure, then specify from that. Re-commissioning the opener to the corrected balance

This is the step that gets skipped, and skipping it is genuinely dangerous rather than merely untidy. Once the springs are correct, the door is lighter and moves more freely than it has in years. The opener is still set for the old door — wound-up force, travel limits set to where the heavy door used to stop, a close force that was calibrated against resistance that no longer exists. An opener carrying an inflated force setting on a now-correctly-balanced door will push through an obstruction with a great deal more authority than it did the day before, and the contact reversal that should stop it is exactly the thing that has been turned down.

So the spring job includes the opener. We reset the force adjustments down to the door as it now behaves, reset the travel limits to the new stopping points, and then test the reversal with a solid object laid flat on the floor in the door's path near the middle of the opening — a short length of timber on its side, about an inch and a half thick. The door has to meet it, stop, and return promptly. We adjust and retest until it does that cleanly, and we run the photo-eyes separately, because they are a different system and passing one test says nothing about the other.

We also check the opener's rating plate against the weight we have just measured, since we have both numbers in front of us at that point. If the opener is comfortably rated for the door, it goes back into service properly set and you will get years out of it. If it turns out to have been running over its rating all along, you will hear that with the figures attached, along with what it means for how long the drive train is likely to last.
