A new door is the one job in this trade where the outcome is settled before the door ever turns up. Get the survey right and fitting day runs smoothly. Get it wrong and you have a well-made door that does not suit the building it has gone onto — a fault no amount of later tinkering will undo.

On a La Puente garage the survey carries an extra load, and it is the part that matters most. Before a door, a track kit, a spring package or an opener can be specified, we have to work out what the structure actually is and what it can be asked to bear. On a carport walled in to make a garage, the roof, the front beam and the slab were all built for another purpose, and not one of them can be taken for garage structure.

The survey reads the structure first, then the sizes

Before the tape comes out we read the building. Does the roof over the garage slope to run water off like a carport, or lie flat like a garage ceiling? Are there original posts at the front corners, with a beam spanning between them that was the carport's front? What is that beam made of, and what does it land on at each end? What is the roof framing behind it, and could it hold an opener? Is the wall across the front structure or light infill stood on the slab? And what is the slab itself at its edge, where the door's tracks will come down? That reading decides what can be anchored where, and it happens before anything is specified, not after.

Then the five sizes every install turns on — opening width, opening height, headroom over the header, backroom into the garage, and sideroom at each jamb. On a walled-in carport none of the five can be guessed, because the opening was set by where the old posts stood and how high the beam sat, not by the widths and heights door hardware is designed around. It is frequently not a standard door size, so either the door is built to the actual opening or the opening is brought to a standard size with added framing — and if someone has already added framing to make a stock door fit, that framing is later work whose strength has to be established, not assumed.

The survey also fixes how honest the estimate can be. If the old front beam will not take the reaction of the spring package the new door needs, that has to be handled before the door goes on, and it belongs on the written estimate as a line of its own rather than a chat at four o'clock on fitting day. If the infill wall gives the vertical track nothing solid to grip, backing goes in. If the slab edge will not hold the track foot, the anchorage gets worked out. None of these are big items on their own. They only get expensive when they surface late.

Picking hardware for the opening, not the catalogue

Where the opening the posts and beam left is not a standard size — and on conversions it very often is not — the honest choices are a made-to-measure door or a properly worked-out adaptation of the opening, and we will show you the measurements behind each so it is a matter of arithmetic, not opinion. Ramming a stock door into a non-standard opening by packing and trimming until it more or less fits is how a door ends up running in a frame that is neither its own geometry nor the opening's, binding for the rest of its life. Where headroom under the front beam is tight, low-headroom track hardware uses a reduced-radius track and a shifted shaft to bring the door into its overhead run in less height.

The opener choice runs on the same logic. A wall-mounted jackshaft sits beside the torsion shaft and drives it directly, doing away with the ceiling rail, the hangers and every load they would otherwise put into a carport roof built to shed weather and often pitched. On a conversion whose roof timber was sized to hold up nothing but itself, that is frequently the durable pick rather than the premium one. Where a rail opener is the right fit, we plan the hanger points against the actual roof framing overhead — spread over more than one member, drops as short as the pitch allows, braced against swing — instead of fixing wherever the rail lands, and we keep the header bracket off any front beam carrying the spring.

Door weight is the third choice, and it feeds the other two. An insulated twin-skin sectional is a good deal heavier than a single-skin steel door the same size, which means a heavier spring package, which means a bigger reaction into the beam over the opening. On a purpose-built garage that is a plain trade-off. On a walled-in carport it is a question to answer before the door is ordered, because the right order is to establish what the front beam and roof can carry, then choose a door that lives inside that, then reinforce where reinforcing genuinely earns its keep. Choose the door first and meet the structure afterwards, and that is how these installs come unstuck.

Springing the new door, and how the day goes

The spring package is worked out from the door going on, never from the one coming off, and on a walled-in carport the two seldom match. We weigh the finished door, cross-check it against travel height and drum size, and set wire size, inside diameter and wound length off those figures. Carrying an old spring over because it still looks sound means the system runs mis-set from day one and takes the opener down with it inside a couple of years — and on a conversion it also means loading a front beam that was sized, if it was sized at all, for a roof edge and not a spring.

The anchorage gets built as part of the install rather than treated as an afterthought fixing. Where the front beam will take the bearing plate straight and hold it still, we fix into sound material and prove it. Where it will not, the plate is carried onto structure that can take the reaction without giving, so the load spreads instead of piling onto a beam that will bow under it. This is the most valuable thing we do on a La Puente install and also the least visible, which is why it is worth laying out beforehand rather than after. It is what keeps the door from drifting out of balance over the seasons on a beam that would otherwise move under it.

On the day, the old door and every layer of hardware behind it come off, and the opening gets a proper look in daylight with the door gone. Then the travel limits, the force settings, and a check that the door reverses on both the photo-eyes and a physical touch.
