When a torsion spring lets go it is a single flat report from inside the garage, loud enough that people come out of neighbouring buildings to see what happened. Afterwards the door is either immovable or terrifyingly heavy, and the opener will pull, strain and give up, because it was designed to guide a counterbalanced door rather than to lift a dead weight.
What is worth knowing, and what almost nobody is told, is that the bang is not usually the first thing the spring did. It is the last. The sounds a spring makes on its way out

The next stage tends to be a finer, more musical note — people describe it as a singing or a ringing, a metallic tone that comes and goes with the door's movement rather than a scrape. That is a spring under a load it is no longer comfortably absorbing, with its coils no longer spacing evenly through the wind. A related and more urgent sound is a clunk, thud or knock at the instant the door breaks away from the floor, or at the moment of reversal at the top. That is something seating and unseating under load: a coil binding then releasing, a stationary cone that has moved a fraction on its anchor, or the spring shifting bodily on the shaft. Any clunk from the spring line deserves attention promptly rather than at your convenience.
There is one more signal, and it is not from the spring at all — it is from the motor. What you get instead is mechanical behaviour, and behaviour is audible. This is the entire argument for treating spring noise as a diagnostic reading rather than an annoyance, and it is the one part of a garage door where listening genuinely outperforms looking.
