On a single-storey house the garage door is the largest flat surface on the front elevation by a wide margin, so replacing it changes how the house reads from the street more than most owners expect. That part is worth taking time over.
The part that decides whether the installation lasts, though, is not the door. It is the opening. In a garage that has been widened, reopened or reframed at some point in the last seventy years, establishing the true condition and shape of that opening is most of the job, and it has to happen before anything is ordered.
Surveying an opening that has already been altered
Five measurements decide what door and what hardware will work: opening width, opening height, headroom above the head, backroom into the garage, and sideroom at each jamb. On this housing stock we take more than five, because assuming any of them is symmetrical is how installations go wrong here. Width goes on the tape at the head, the middle and the floor. Height goes on at both jambs. Both diagonals get measured. A string line goes across the head. Those extra readings take a few minutes and they answer the question that matters most on a modified opening, which is whether the hole is actually square or merely close enough that nobody has noticed.
If it is not square, the pattern says what happened. A height that is shorter in the middle than at either jamb indicates deflection across the span, which on a widened opening points at the member that was put in to carry the load. A height that is short at one jamb only points at movement at one bearing point rather than a sag. Diagonals that disagree while both heights read the same points at the jamb line being out of plumb rather than at the head. These are different conditions with different remedies, and mixing them up produces a new door that binds in exactly the way the old one did.

Insulation is worth a deliberate decision on a single-storey house rather than a default. Where the garage adjoins living space on one side — normal in these plans — a polyurethane-cored sectional with a steel back skin runs noticeably quieter than a single-skin door, and that reduction is heard inside the house rather than only in the garage. The back skin earns its place for a second reason that has nothing to do with heat: a double-skinned section is far more rigid across its width, and rigidity is what stops a wide door flexing and loading its hinges and end stiles unevenly. On a widened opening, where the door is wider than the building originally called for, that rigidity matters more than it would on a narrow one.
On appearance, the useful thing on a low, wide single-storey elevation is a door that does not fight the proportions of the house. Long-panel and flush steel doors sit comfortably; stamped-steel carriage styling is a legitimate option that carries none of the weight or upkeep of real timber, which is worth knowing when the door is already at the wider end. The practical advice is to stand at the kerb before choosing, look at what the roof line, the windows and the entry are already doing, and pick something that agrees with them rather than choosing a panel profile from a catalogue in isolation.
