Opener complaints arrive in three familiar shapes. Rolling code replaced it and has been the standard for decades. The principle is simple and it is a genuine fix rather than an improvement in degree: the transmitter and the receiver each hold a counter, the code changes on every press, and a code that has already been sent is dead the instant it has been used. Repeating a signal that was captured earlier achieves nothing, because the receiver has already moved on. Telling which one you have takes two minutes and no tools. Open the battery compartment of the remote: a row of small sliding or rocker switches means fixed code. Look at the motor head, generally the back or the end panel near where the aerial wire hangs down: a matching switch bank confirms it, while a single button labelled LEARN, SMART or PROGRAM means the unit is a rolling-code one. What to do about a fixed-code unit, and the rest of the access side
The first thing to say is that finding DIP switches does not automatically mean buying a new opener, and we would rather explain the options than push the expensive one. Where the mechanics are sound — the motor healthy, the gearbox quiet, the rail and trolley in good order — a modern rolling-code receiver can frequently be fitted to the existing head. That replaces the part that is actually obsolete and keeps the parts that are still working, and it comes with new transmitters paired to it. Replacement of the whole unit becomes the honest recommendation when other things stack up alongside the radio issue: a logic board no longer obtainable, a worn drive train, a rail at the end of its life, motor bearings gone, or the absence of the later safety features.
Whichever route you take, the paired-transmitter list is the next item and it costs nothing but a few minutes.
