Opener faults fall into three piles: nothing happens at all, the motor runs but the door does not move, or the door starts to close and changes its mind. The third pile is the largest, it is nearly always the safety sensors, and it is nearly always far cheaper to resolve than the owner is braced for.

The door judders on start-up, the motor head visibly moves when it takes the load, the door pulls toward one side, or the unit reverses on obstruction with no obstruction present because the drive is binding. Owners reasonably conclude the opener is failing and start pricing replacements. A new opener fitted to the same mounting behaves the same way within weeks, because the fault was never in the box.
The correction is to get the mounting onto structure that can carry it, set the rail true to the door's travel, and where necessary span between members rather than fix into whatever is directly overhead. It is a considerably smaller job than a replacement unit, and it is worth checking before anybody spends money on a motor. The other thing we look at while we are up there is the door arm, which should connect to the top section through proper reinforcement — an arm bolted to unreinforced sheet steel will eventually pull through, and on a door that has been repaired piecemeal that reinforcement is not always still in place.
Photo-eyes, and safeties that have been worked around
Every opener sold for domestic use since federal rules changed in the early 1990s has a pair of infrared eyes mounted low on either side of the opening, and a closing door has to stop and go back up the moment that beam is broken. The consequence is that anything interrupting the beam, or anything that has knocked an eye off line, shows up as a door that refuses to close and gives you no clue why. Mounting height matters too: the eyes belong low, within a few inches of the floor, and in garages where the brackets were fitted to suit the available fixing rather than the specification, they are sometimes set considerably higher than they should be. An eye at knee height still stops a car, but it does not do the job it exists to do.
There is a harder version of this which we will always raise, and we will raise it without any implied criticism. When a sensor fault becomes persistent and inconvenient, a well-understood workaround is to bridge the sensor circuit so the opener stops asking. It is an intuitive fix, it takes five minutes, and it makes the immediate problem disappear. It also removes the only thing standing between a closing door and whatever is underneath it. If we find a bridged or bypassed sensor circuit we will tell you what it is doing, and we will not leave the door in that condition — we will get the sensors working properly instead, which nearly always means alignment, a clean lens, or a fault in the low-voltage run rather than new parts.
That low-voltage run is worth testing rather than guessing at. In most of these garages it is a retrofit, added years after the building went up and routed along whatever surface was available, sometimes spliced, sometimes stapled a fraction too hard through the insulation. That produces an intermittent short that comes and goes for months and drives people to distraction. Swapping the eyes fixes it for about a fortnight. Testing continuity along the whole run finds it properly, and a clean re-run of the cable is a small job with a permanent result.
When the motor runs and nothing moves, and when to replace
An opener that hums or whirs without shifting the door has usually stripped its main drive gear, a nylon gear running against a steel worm shaft. On the major brands that is a gear-and-sprocket kit rather than a new unit, and we carry them. What we will not do is fit one and drive away, because a stripped gear is very often the symptom rather than the disease. The real answer is a bottom seal profile that takes up the difference, and setting the limit to where the door actually lands.
