A spring failure is one of the few household faults that identifies itself out loud. There is a single flat report from the garage, loud enough that people assume a shelf has come down, and afterwards the door is either immovable or frighteningly heavy. The motor will pull against it, labour and stop — an opener is built to guide a door that its springs are already carrying, not to hoist the whole dead weight unaided.
