Opener trouble arrives in three recognisable shapes. Pressing the button produces nothing at all; the motor runs while the door stays exactly where it was; or the door sets off downward and then thinks better of it and returns to the top. The third is by far the most common, it is nearly always the reversing safety circuit rather than the opener, and it is among the cheapest faults in this trade to put right.

The intermittent fault that turns out to be corrosion

In a marine-influenced garage the degradation is electrical rather than optical. That terminal block holds bare copper tails under small screws, and chloride-laden damp is the worst thing that can happen to bare copper. What we find is green oxide on the conductor at the point it enters the terminal, screws seized into their threads, pitting on the sensor contacts themselves, and mid-run joints made with a twist and a wrap of tape that have quietly gone high-resistance inside the tape. The resulting fault comes and goes with humidity rather than with anything anybody did — fine on a dry afternoon, dead on a damp morning, fine again the following week. That pattern is the most useful single thing you can tell us on the phone.

The consequence that matters is this: a new opener does not cure it. The replacement motor head lands on the same oxidised tails and the same tired run, and the fault returns within months with a fresh invoice behind it. We test continuity along the actual cable, cut back to bright conductor, terminate into proper insulated connectors instead of twists, and re-route the run away from the wall face where condensation gathers. It is a small piece of work that settles a symptom which has had plenty of households on the point of buying hardware they did not need.

Mechanical wear inside the motor head

An opener that whirs enthusiastically while the door stands still has usually lost its drive gear. On most units that is a moulded nylon component driven by a steel worm on the motor shaft, it is a designed wear part rather than a defect, and on the common makes it is supplied as a serviceable kit. Replacing it is bench-level work and it is not a reason to condemn the unit.

We will not fit one blind, though, because a stripped gear is usually the consequence of something else rather than the cause of anything. Where an opener has spent a couple of years hauling a door whose springs have lost tension, or forcing a door that binds because a roller is seizing, a new gear will be destroyed on precisely the schedule that killed the last one. The diagnostic giveaway is the force adjustment. If it has been wound progressively higher over the years to make the door close reliably, the machine has been compensating for a mechanical problem and the gear is simply where it finally gave way.

The rail and the trolley wear out as well, and they announce it in a recognisable way. Chains stretch until they slap against the rail on start-up, and the trolley carriage develops enough play that the whole assembly shudders as it picks up load. On a rail that is otherwise straight and sound, re-tensioning buys real time. Where the carriage and rail are both worn out, a replacement drive assembly is the durable answer, and that is a sensible moment to consider a belt in place of the chain.

Range deserves its own mention here purely because of the housing mix. A handset has to reach a receiver through whatever happens to be in between, and in a city running from detached rear garages to modern attached ones the distances and obstructions vary enormously. Where a remote works from the driveway but dies at the kerb, the usual suspects are an aerial wire coiled up against the motor head instead of hanging free, a receiver on an ageing board that has lost sensitivity, and interference from a nearby transmitter. Hanging that aerial properly and siting an external keypad on the correct face of the building will do more for daily reliability than any amount of extra spend on the unit.
