Opener complaints fall into three groups. Nothing happens at all; the motor runs but the door does not move; or the door starts to close and then reverses back up. The third group is the largest, it is nearly always the safety sensors, and it is nearly always far cheaper to correct than the homeowner is expecting.

The low-voltage side has usually had the same history. Photo-eye wiring in a rear garage tends to be run by hand — stapled along a sill plate, clipped to old timber, occasionally joined mid-run and taped rather than terminated. Damp gets into the joint, or a staple driven slightly too hard has pierced the insulation, and the result is an intermittent fault that comes and goes with the weather. The door refuses to close on some days and behaves perfectly on others. We test continuity along the run rather than swapping the eyes and hoping, because swapping the eyes on a wiring fault fixes nothing and costs money.
Then radio. A remote pressed from a car at the kerb has to reach a receiver that may be eighty or a hundred feet away, past a building or two on a deep lot. Reversing doors and the rest of the sensor picture
Since 1993 every opener sold in the United States has carried a pair of photo-eyes mounted low on each side of the opening, wired back to the motor head. If the beam is interrupted while the door is closing, the door must stop and reverse. It is a federal requirement and a good one, and it also means anything at all upsetting either eye presents as a door that will not close and offers no explanation.
In a garage at the back of a lot the physical causes dominate. Rear garages accumulate things at floor level along the walls where the eyes are mounted, and a sensor knocked a few degrees out of line by a bicycle wheel or a stacked box will fail intermittently long before it fails outright. Lenses film over with dust from an unpaved or poorly drained lane much faster than they do on a clean front driveway. Realignment, a clean lens, proper terminations and clipping the run clear of moisture resolves the great majority of reversing-door calls without any new hardware.
