A new door on a wide opening is a bigger decision than a new door on a narrow one, and not only because there is more of it. The choices you make about construction change the weight, the weight changes the counterbalance and the operator, and the counterbalance and the operator are what decide whether the door is still working properly in fifteen years. Almost none of that is visible in a showroom photograph.
So an installation survey here spends most of its time on two things: what the opening actually is, measured rather than assumed, and what the door is going to be made of. Measuring an opening that is not a standard size
Five numbers decide what can physically be fitted, and on wide or tall openings none of them can be assumed. Opening width and opening height. Then the condition and the geometry of the opening itself, which matters far more with a rigid door than with a flexible one. We check both jambs for plumb, the header for level, and the opening for square by measuring the diagonals, and we check the slab across the width of the opening. On graded ground a slab edge or a stem wall can settle a small amount over the years, and a steel sectional with some flex in it will absorb that quietly while a full-view aluminium frame will not. It also insulates, which matters where there is habitable space over or beside the garage. A bonded section that has been struck cannot be straightened, because the crushed core and the broken bond behind the skin cannot be reached from outside.
