A torsion spring letting go announces itself with one flat crack from the garage, loud enough that people step outside to see what happened in the street. What follows is a door that either will not move at all or is suddenly, alarmingly heavy, and an opener that pulls, labours and quits — because it was designed to guide a door its springs are already holding, not to hoist a dead weight.

This is the most frequent single call we take from Alhambra, and the cause here is unusually consistent. In most cases the spring that failed was the correct spring, properly specified for the door it was fitted to. What defeated it was the environment it has been asked to live in: heat that turned its lubrication into an abrasive varnish, and a hundred years of drying in the timber its anchor is bolted to.

Why a correctly specified spring dies early in this city

A torsion spring is a steel bar wound into coils, and everything about its rated life assumes it is working in clean conditions against low friction. Two things happen to that assumption in a hot, unconditioned, dusty Alhambra garage. First, the light film of lubricant on the coils loses its oil to heat and oxidises into a tacky varnish, which then collects every particle of dust the garage produces and everything the wind brings in past a hardened bottom seal. Do not run the opener, and do not attempt this one

The instruction that saves people the most money is also the simplest: stop pressing the button. The motor's job is to guide a door the springs are already carrying.
