A replacement door is two purchases sold as one. There is the door itself, which is what you choose and what the street sees, and there is the system behind it — track, springs, drums, cables, fixings and the opener that has to move all of it. On a Norwalk house the second purchase matters more than average, because the door you are replacing has very likely been worked hard, and the one going up will be worked exactly as hard.

Getting that right at installation is far cheaper than correcting it at the first failure, which is how most of the doors we later repair in this city ended up on our schedule.

Measuring an original opening that cannot be widened

Norwalk's housing went up quickly and cheaply, and openings from that period are not reliably the size a catalogue expects. So the survey takes more than one width. We record the opening at three heights and the height at each jamb, because in framing put up at speed those figures disagree more often than they agree, and the door has to suit whichever of them is tightest. Alongside that we record the clearance above the opening to the nearest obstruction, the run available along the ceiling for the horizontal track, and the free wall each side of the opening for the vertical track and the spring hardware.

Sideroom is the figure that most often surprises people on a narrow single garage. The vertical track and its brackets need a real allowance on each side, and where a previous owner has built shelving, a workbench or a laundry surface tight against the inside of the jamb, that allowance has been quietly consumed. Finding it out on paper at the survey means we can specify the right bracket set. Finding it out on installation day means somebody's shelving is coming off the wall.

We also look at what the track will be fixed into. Jambs and headers in this housing stock are dimensional timber, and after decades they may be dry, split around old lag holes from a previous installation, or softened where damp has collected at the base of the jamb behind the driveway. Where the substrate will not hold a fixing under load we say so at the estimate and price the remedial work in, itemised, so there is no conversation about extras halfway through the day.

Choosing the door: freeway noise, a working garage, and a hard-used opening

Insulation is worth a proper decision here rather than a default, and in Norwalk there are two reasons beyond temperature. The first is noise. The 5 runs across this city on a diagonal, the 605 runs along its edge and the 91 serves the southern side, and a large number of homes sit close enough to one of those corridors that traffic is a constant background. A single-skin steel door is effectively a large drum facing the street. A polyurethane-cored door with a steel back skin is substantially more rigid and noticeably deadens what comes through, which is a real quality-of-life difference where the garage adjoins living space.

The second reason is that so many garages in this city are working rooms. Where the garage holds the laundry, a workbench, a freezer or the household's tools, an uninsulated door lets it become unusable through an inland summer and lets everything in it sit in temperature swings all year. A double-skinned insulated section addresses that, and it also runs more quietly and flexes less across the opening, which matters on a door that is going to complete a great many cycles.

On style, Norwalk's post-war single-storey housing sits comfortably with clean long-panel, short-panel or flush steel doors, and stamped carriage-house styling has become a common choice on updated frontages. All of them are available in the narrower widths, so a single garage does not limit you to a plain door. What we would steer you away from on a heavily used opening is a genuine solid timber door, not on appearance but on mass — every additional pound has to be counterbalanced by a spring anchored to original framing, and on a door cycling a dozen times a day that weight compounds into every other component.

Installation day on a short driveway

Paperwork comes first, because that is where surprises get eliminated. The survey produces a written figure covering the door, the hardware package behind it, anything the jambs or header need before they will take a fixing, the opener if you are changing it, and the labour to put the lot in. You read that, you decide, and only then does anything get ordered. Where you have picked a width or a finish that nobody holds in stock, the date we give you is the one the supplier actually quoted us, not the one we would prefer to be able to tell you.

The spring package is calculated from the weight of the door being fitted, its travel height and the drum size — never carried over from the door coming off on the assumption that the sizes are similar. This is also where we ask again about your cycle count, because a household running the door ten or twelve times a day should have a high-cycle specification designed in from the first day rather than discovered after the first failure. Fitted during the installation it costs nothing in additional labour.

The driveway itself shapes the day here, so it is worth planning around. We need it empty from kerb to door for the duration: there has to be somewhere to put the old door down as it comes apart, somewhere to assemble new sections flat, and enough standing room to work square to the opening with a ladder. On a driveway barely a car deep, a single vehicle left in front of the garage can cost half an hour. With the space clear, vertical track goes up plumb and true to the path the door will travel, packed out to meet the jambs rather than screwed flat against whatever lean the framing has taken on over the decades. Sections are hung from the bottom upward, hinges and rollers going on as each one seats, and the torsion system is wound to the turn count the calculation produced rather than to feel. Everything after that is proving it: the door is balanced by hand while the drive is still uncoupled, so we know it is right before any motor is asked to compensate for something; then the opener goes on, its limits and force are dialled to this particular door instead of being left where the factory set them, and the reversal is demonstrated twice, once by breaking the safety beam and once against an obstruction laid on the floor. The handover covers the release mechanism, the check you can run yourself each season, and the warranty documents. A single or double opening is normally finished inside the day.

Installation in Norwalk — FAQs

  • Usually not, and it is worth establishing that before you pay for one. Plenty of openings in this housing stock sit within an inch or two of a catalogue width, and the correct answer there is a stock door with the jamb and stop detail worked out so the gap closes weathertight — that is proper practice rather than a shortcut. Where the opening genuinely falls outside that range, made-to-order is available and we will quote it. What we will not do is order a nominal size and pack the difference with foam, which is how doors end up leaking along one edge for the rest of their lives.
