The call rarely names a component, and it does not need to. Paint fades around hardware, so a bracket that has been moved leaves its own portrait behind — a sharp-edged rectangle of older colour, usually with its fixing holes still open. Vacant lag holes beside a live anchor mean the anchor migrated, and the question that matters is whether it migrated for geometry or because the wood under the original position stopped holding. Track testifies too: a splice partway up a vertical run, or a lower section whose gauge disagrees with its upper, is two doors' worth of hardware serving one door. And the components carry maker's marks — a drum from one catalogue riding a shaft against a bearing plate from another is a combination no manufacturer ever shipped, which means somebody composed it, part by part, over time.

The last reading is the fit of the door in its opening. A door original to its framing sits close and even; daylight running down both jambs, a header gap that tapers, or stop moulding packed out to chase the door's face are the signatures of a replacement standing in an opening framed for something else. That is not a defect in itself — plenty of older openings hold replacement doors and hold them well — but it tells us the geometry was adapted rather than designed, and adapted geometry is where binding, uneven seal wear and off-square loading like to live. By the end of this reading we usually know more about the door's history than anyone who has lived with it, and only then does diagnosis start.

Then the fault is placed inside that history

The reading matters because it changes diagnoses. Take a roller worn out on one flank. On a one-owner door with a known past, that is a roller problem, and you change the roller. On a door whose track was spliced from two gauges by an unknown hand, the same worn roller is a measurement prompt: check whether the splice put a step or a taper into the run, because if it did, every roller passing that point gets ground down on schedule, and the fifth replacement roller will die exactly as the first four did. The part is the same. The repair is completely different. Which of the two you are in is decided entirely by history, and on an inherited door the hardware is the only place that history survives.

The next step takes the motor out of the argument.
