Dealing with Remote Control Frequency Interference
Written by Marcus G. (Opener Specialist) · 5 min read

You pull up to your driveway, press the remote button, and... nothing happens until you are bumper-to-bumper with the garage door. Range degradation is a frustrating issue caused by radio frequency (RF) interference. Since garage openers operate on standard 310, 315, or 390 MHz bands, local electronics can easily jam the signal.
Diagnosing LED Bulb RF Leakage
The most common culprit is a standard LED or compact fluorescent (CFL) light bulb installed inside the opener unit itself. Standard LED bulbs use internal driver circuits that pulse electricity at high frequencies, emitting electromagnetic noise that blocks the opener's radio receiver. To solve this:
- Remove the bulbs from the opener and test the remote range.
- If the range improves, replace the bulbs with **garage-door-rated LED bulbs**, which are specifically shielded to prevent RF leakage.
Other Interference Sources
Other sources include nearby smart home hubs, baby monitors, wireless security cameras, or TV antennas. If extending the opener's thin purple/gray antenna wire doesn't solve the issue, we can install a dual-frequency receiver kit to bypass the jammed band.
