Garage Door Safety Eye Adjustment: Realigning Sensors Step-by-Step

If your garage door opens normally but refuses to close unless you hold down the wall button, your safety photo-eye sensors are likely misaligned. Monitored safety sensors are required by federal law to prevent the door from closing on obstructions.

Realigning Your Sensors in 4 Steps

Follow these steps to adjust your safety sensors:

  1. Clean the Lenses: Wipe away any dust, cobwebs, or moisture on both lenses with a soft cloth.
  2. Verify the Bracket Height: Both sensors must be mounted exactly opposite each other, no higher than 6 inches above the floor.
  3. Check the LED Lights: The sending sensor has an amber LED, while the receiving sensor has a green LED. If either LED is off or blinking, the sensors are misaligned.
  4. Adjust the Brackets: Loosen the wing nut on the bracket and gently shift the sensor until the LEDs shine solid. Tighten the wing nut to secure them in place.
